Our daughter, Mary, is pregnant with our tenth grandchild. Before we had our first one, my beloved friend in Oklahoma, Dr. Curtis Linton, told me that I wouldn’t understand the following statement until it happened. “I’ve learned more about God and the universe from my grandchildren than all the studying I have ever done.” Now ten grandchildren later, I do understand.
With over 1,700 books in my personal library and several degrees on the wall entering into my study, it can truly be said that if you knew grandchildren were such a completion of life’s circle and so much fun, you would have them first.
Springing forth from this knowledge has been an acute awareness to listen closely to what kids say as it seems as though Jesus Christ was right when he warned us to be careful how we treat children because in the heavenly realms they have angels that are always beholding the face of God, (Matthew 18:10).
It seems that children say things that we or others can’t see or say. Recently, this was driven home with the words of an ancient Jewish prophet and an experience with a close colleague’s son.
The Bible says, “Out of the mouths of little children, you perfect your praise,” ( Matthew 21:26).
Listen to this child, Ross Hester, the eight year old son of Pastor Reggie Hester, a Holy Spirit filled man overseeing a spiritual awakening in Chesapeake, VA.
After last Sunday evening’s service, being honored to break bread with Ross and his older brother and sister, we discussed how Ross, who was supposed to have died at birth, seems to have amazing and keen insights into life demonstrated by the peculiar and out of the ordinary things he does and the statements he makes.
After dinner, knowing full well the anguishing sacrifice made by true ministers of the gospel and their families, I took the all the money I had in my wallet (two bills) and gave it to Danielle and Davis, pastor and Mrs. Hester’s teenagers. Telling them, “Don’t tell Ross because he might become jealous.” Then it was discovered that there was a plastic bag in my brief case where I keep all the pennies I find (and that’s a lot!) and the change that I gather while I am traveling.
Upon discovering it, I said, “Please give this to Ross, and tell him it is from me in the name of Jesus and His Cross and to be strong and to pray for me.”
The next day, his father related Ross’ response. Upon seeing the bag, Ross opened it up, (it was a rather large Ziploc bag) and began smelling deeply. “What are you doing, Ross?” his father asked.
“I am smelling Rick Amato’s faith,” Ross replied.
His parents asked him, “Ross, can you smell faith?”
“If there is enough of it!” Ross replied.
Well, there is enough of it to post this blog and hope somehow you will read it and leave a comment so that those of us who are people of faith might realize the power there is when faith joins unity. There’s enough of it to hope that while 30,000 children will die today of starvation, you’ll be mindful of the children right in front of you. You never know what inspiration or affirmation you might get out of the mouth of babes.
